From Backgammon for Blood, by Bruce Becker
| White to play 4-4. |
There are several ways to play this throw. The move I recommend is to bring two men from B12 to W5. This makes a very important point; it leaves you builders (without exposure) on W6, W8, and B12; and it greatly enhances your blocking game. It is extremely strong.
The first alternative is to move two men from B12 to W9 and two men from W8 to W4. This is almost as good, and has many of the same advantages that the similar move for the 3-3 opener has. I don’t think you’ll be making a mistake to play it this way. It is a matter of preference, and I prefer the W5 point.
A second alternative is to move two men from B12 to W9 and two men from B1 to B5. Here again, I don’t like this early a move from the B1 point, and I recommend against it.
Another alternative I’ve seen used is to run the two men on B1 all the way out to B9. In this move you are totally committed to a running game and had better start praying. Further, you have done nothing to improve your blocking position. This is the weakest of the various alternatives for this throw.
