From Backgammon, the Cruelest Game, by Barclay Cooke and Jon Bradshaw

Black to play 4-4.

Bring two men from white’s 1 point up to white’s 5 point and two men from black’s 8 point down to black’s 4 point.

It is true that the blot on black’s 8 point now becomes vulnerable to any roll of white’s totaling 7, but it also negates his ordinarily good roll of 6-1, since he will probably use it to hit black rather than making his own bar point. Our recommended play * employs the best offensive and defensive tactics. Instead of the 4 point, most experts recommend making black’s 9 point, but we prefer the former play.
