From Backgammon, the Cruelest Game, by Barclay Cooke and Jon Bradshaw

Black to play 2-2.

Black’s correct response is to bring two men up from white’s 1 point to white’s 5 point. This is a valuable defensive play and nullifies the threat of white’s outer builders. If white had opened with 3-2, 5-2, or 5-4, black would play the double 2’s this same way. Under no circumstances should black use the 2’s to hit a man in the outer board.
