From Backgammon, the Cruelest Game, by Barclay Cooke and Jon Bradshaw
| Black to play 1-1. |
It would be folly to use the double 1’s to bring the lone outside man into black’s inner board. The correct play is to move two men from the 6 point to the 5 point, one man from the 4 point to the 3 point and one man from the 2 point to the 1 point. Black is still behind, but his position is considerably improved. By bringing the one man in, on the other hand, black would, when bearing off, be wasting all rolls of 5’s and most rolls of 3’s and 1’s, and would fall even further behind.
To make the point more pragmatically, if black were to bring the lone man in and white then doubled, it would be an almost impossible take (acceptance of the double); played the recommended way , if white doubles, black should take.
