From Better Backgammon, by Tim Holland

White to play 2-2.

The correct play is to make your 4 point, 5 point, and move one man from your 11 to your 9 point.

You are much too far behind in the race to move to Black’s 3 point. You must plan to build your board and hope to hit a blot as Black is bearing off.

With your men on Black’s 3 point, he will have very little difficulty in entering his men safely, and the probabilities of his leaving a blot will be greatly reduced. True, a roll of double 6s would force him to leave a blot on his 9 point, but it also forces him to leave a blot on his 3 point if you stay back on Black’s 1 point.
