The correct play is to make White’s 5 point. This formidable block you have created makes it very difficult for Black to escape. It would have been incorrect to have hit Black’s blot on his 8 point. This would have given him an opportunity to make a second point in your board.
You should not be too concerned about escaping with your solitary man on Black’s 1 point. Black will have to be very lucky in order to prevent this. Now that your board is so dangerous, the additional blots that Black may have to leave in his attempt to contain this man will expose him to being gammoned.
