From Backgammon for Blood, by Bruce Becker
| White to play 6-2. |
Counting, you will find that you need thirteen throws to get all your men into your inner board. You then also need another throw to bear off a man, so you have to figure on a probable fourteen throws to avoid a gammon. Your opponent, however, is already ahead of you, for he should be able to get off in twelve throws. Even so, it is fairly close, and if you were to get a couple of lucky throws, you might be able to avoid a gammon if you were to run now.
However, because you are in a very good position to play a strong back game, with an excellent chance to win, it would be criminal to even think of trying to run at this moment.
When your board is that good for a strong back game so that you probably can win once you get the shot you’re waiting for, you stay in the back game even at the risk of a gammon. It’s worth the chance.
