| Black to play 5-1. |
Bring one man from white’s 12 point to black’s 8 point and drop another man from black’s 6 point to black’s 5 point. All opening 5’s are clumsy; any other roll has greater promise.
An alternative play would be to bring a man from white’s 12 point to black’s bar point, but this is not as valuable a point to attempt to secure at this early stage of the game. Although unsafe, it is best to gamble in order to secure the important 5 point.
Again, black should not split the two men on white’s 1 point; the risks are serious and the rewards slight.
