Bring two men from white’s 12 point to black’s 9 and 8 points. Black is exposed to any 8, but it is a better play than bringing one man from white’s 1 point out to white’s 10 point, where black would be vulnerable to a direct 3. Black has acquired nine pips (or points) and should not relinquish them lightly.
The one drawback to our recommended play is that black adds an irrelevant man to his 8 point, but the play is preferred for the extra builder he acquires on his 9 point.
