From Better Backgammon, by Tim Holland
| White to play 2-1. |
The correct play is to move both men off your 6 point to your 5 and 4 points. This eliminates any possibility of having a blot on your next roll. Black, on his next turn — unless he is fortunate enough to roll a total of 5 or under — will be forced either to break his board or your 1 point. If he breaks your 1 point, you will have several combinations that will permit you to point on his remaining blot, thus forcing him to enter past your men where he no longer will be a threat.
If you were to bear a man off your 3 point, whether Black broke your 1 point or not, the rolls of double 6s, 4s, and 6 and 5 would force you to leave a blot. If he chose to break it, then add the roll of double 5s to the list.
