White to play 5-4.

The correct play is to make Black’s 5 point. By having this point, you prevent Black from blocking your escape. You also have a landing spot in the event you are hit sometime later in the game.

You hope on your next roll to make your bar point, 4, or 3 point, which would end, more or less, Black’s attempts to escape with his men on your 1 point.

The alternative move is tempting but incorrect. It is to enter on Black’s 5 point and hit Black’s blot on your 9 point. This would give Black a fourth man in your home board, perhaps allowing him to make a second point there, which could prove embarrassing to you later on.
