From Better Backgammon, by Tim Holland
| White to play 4-3. |
The correct play is to move one man from Black’s 11 point to White’s bar point. The seemingly obvious play of making White’s 2 point, hitting Black’s blot, must not be made. You want Black to break his board. By putting his man on the rim, he may roll several times without entering, thus preserving his board.
By not hitting, no matter what Black rolls, with the exception of double 6s or 6 and 1, he will be forced to break that beautiful position in his home board. You should not be concerned about being able to make your 2 point. You should have very little difficulty in doing so. Nor should you worry about Black making your 2 point, for to do so he must give up your 1 point, which will make it that much easier for you to bear off successfully.
