From Better Backgammon, by Tim Holland
| White to play 4-1. |
The correct play is to make White’s 5 point. You are well ahead in a race, and it appears that your main concern is to be able to bring your men into your home board safely. The 5 point is invaluable in your attempt to do this.
If you were to hit Black’s blot on the bar and move this man to your 3 point, you would be giving Black the opportunity to enter on the 1 or 2 points from where he would be a thorn in your side.
You may argue that by not hitting you are giving Black the opportunity to make your bar point. To accomplish this, Black must by necessity then give up your 4 point. If in doing this he leaves a blot on the 4 point, you will have several combinations which will enable you to make your 4 point, or others which will merely hit or hit and pass. This is a play you hope Black makes, for it is to your advantage if he does so.
