From Better Backgammon, by Tim Holland
| White to play 3-1. |
The correct play is to move one man from White’s 4 point to White’s 3 point, and one man from White’s 4 point to White’s 1 point. On White’s next roll, regardless of whether Black leaves one man or two men on White’s 2 point, there is no roll that can cause White to leave a blot. On the other hand, had you removed one man from White’s 5 point to White’s 1 point, the rolls of double 6s, 5s, 6 and 5, 6 and 4, 6 and 3, 6 and 2, 6 and 4, 5 and 3, 5 and 2, or 4 and 2 would force you to leave a blot (more than 50 percent of the time).
I have given you this rather simple problem in order to make you aware of the possibilities that may exist in other seemingly innocuous situations that may confront you in the future.
