From The Backgammon Book, by Oswald Jacoby and John R. Crawford

White to play 4-4.

Move your two back men from black one point to black five point and two men from black twelve to your own nine point. An alternate play, moving two men from black twelve to your own five point, is just about as good. Our recommended play gives you great mobility: Your back men are brought forward to where they aim directly at the black outer board and indirectly at your own outer board, while covering one of the most important points in your opponent’s inner board; your two men on your nine point threaten the bar, the five, the four, and the three points.

The alternate play leaves you with your five point made immediately, and the more you play backgammon the more you will see the great value of this point.
