Brooks: Backgammon's Best Openings and Replies
|
Who is Bart Brooks???
When you go to his webpage
(http://www.backgammonquizcards.com/images/samplepage_book.pdf)
he gives you a sample of his new book listing the responses to the 5-2
opening played 24/22, 13/8. Unfortunately for the book's purchasers, he
doesn't list 13/3* as the best play for a 6-4 roll at any common score.
(No second best play, no equities, at least not on this sample page.)
Here's my rollout:

Chris Yep writes:
From http://www.backgammonquizcards.com/author.html:
"Bart Brooks is winner of the 1974 European Championships at Monte
Carlo, now called the World Championships, and won many lesser
tournaments in that time. Shortly following Monte Carlo, he had a twenty
year hiatus from backgammon but has returned, arming himself with the
computer knowledge which every expert makes use of today. In the few
tournaments he manages to visit, he has done well. He is on FIBS as
Blackstar and carries a 1900 + rating at present (October 2004)."
(I assume you saw the above link, but others might be interested.)
Based on the sample page that he posted (link given by you), he
apparently doesn't understand the 2-away/2-away score. Based on the
sample page it looks like he rolls out all moves at 5 different scores:
(1) Money, (2) DMP, (3) Gammon-save, (4) Gammon-go, (5) 2-away/2-away.
Of course checker plays at 2-away/2-away should be made exactly as at
DMP (assuming that neither player has made any cube errors yet [e.g.
failing to double when doubling is correct]; this is obviously the case
for the moves that he considers). It would be interesting to see whether
he found any different plays for DMP and 2-away/2-away (if he did, the
obvious explanation would be statistical noise in the rollouts).

Gregg Cattanach writes:
Bart Brooks has put together a book of rollout info for first roll and
2nd roll positions. Unfortunately, the rollout parameters for the 2nd
roll positions are painfully weak. He used 108 games, 2-ply fast,
truncated at 7. He referred to this as the 'mini-rollout feature' of
Snowie 4, which is pretty silly, becuase these are just the default
settings. 108 games, 2-ply fast, truncate at 7 isn't a 'feature'.
Paul and Nack's book will make his book obselete. Bart's a good guy, and
worked hard on his book, but the information has really limited value.

Ned Cross writes:
Bart was at the Seattle ABT tournament in September. I believe he lives
in the Vancouver, BC area.
Having all the openers and replies on flash cards seems like a great
idea. Once you have the framework, you can always update the information
when more rigorous data becomes available.
