"Have you ever wondered about the complexity of high level tournament backgammon? If you have, then one way to find out is to read a book which analyses in great depth a match between two great players. Costa Rica 1994 is a really splendid book which analyses the final match of The Third Tournament of the Americas between Mike Svolbodny and Mike Senkiewicz, currently rated by his peers as the best player in the world.
This book is very well written and extremely instructive and I would recommend it to anyone serious about improving their tournament play."Chris Bray, in BackgammonAn Independent View

"Antonio Ortega and Mario Madrigal have once again combined efforts to produce an excellent annotation. In addition to using manual rollouts to supplement the analysis, the authors employed the powerful JellyFish computer tool to produce computer rollouts and help with cube analysis. Utilizing these features, Ortega and Madrigal, along with guest coauthor Danny Kleinman, have supplied very valuable information on doubling and market losers in critical positions, an excellent type of innovative analysis.
Although the annotations are very good, they are not quite as high quality as their previous book, Costa Rica 1993. Perhaps the authors leaned too heavily on the JellyFish rollouts. Still, there is a lot of valuable material in Backgammon: Costa Rica 1994, which is quite entertaining and instructional. I would certainly recommend it to any serious student of the game."Kit Woolsey, May 1996

"The single match presented in the book is a good match for study, well played on both sides, and one which hits some interesting scores along the way before winding up at 15-12.
There isn't a single checker play problem in the book that I can point out as an error. There are a few positions passed over without comment that I thought deserved attention. Now and then, an equity difference is shown that seems improbably large. And I think the methods of analysing double-or-wait decisions could be improved upon.
Backgammon: Costa Rica 1994 is primarily a connoisseur's banquet. Advanced players who want to stay competitive will consider it essential. Intermediates can also enjoy and learn from the book, but they should remain aware that its main focus is on situations that are problems for Senkiewicz and Svobodny, rather than on the vast body of knowledge that underlies the 'routine' for two great players."Walter Trice, Flint Area BackgammoNews, April/May 1996

Backgammon: Costa Rica 1994, like the previous Backgammon: Costa Rica 1993, presents a detailed annotation of the final match of the Cariari Masters from the Tournament of the Americas.
In this new book Antonio Ortega and Mario Madrigal, two of the authors of the acclaimed earlier volume, annotate the featured match in cooperation with world-rowned analyst Danny Kleinman. Contestants Mike Senkiewicz and Mike Svobodny are both well-known top experts and previous Cariari winners. Senkiewica was voted the world's best player in the 1995 Giants of Backgammon poll. Svobodny won the 1984 World Championship in Monte Carlo and the 1992 World Cup in Dallas.
