Running rollouts in background
|
I wish there was a way you could pause a rollout and then resume it from
the point it left off. I run rollouts at work but sometimes have to abort
them because my system is so slow.

I'm using the panels version of GNU; when I want to do a rollout, I'll
first analyze the move, select the moves I want to roll out, then hit the
rollout button (below the analysis panel).
A window will pop up showing the current status of the rollout. If you hit
the "stop" button, the rollout will basically pause - you can start it up
again by choosing the moves you want to rollout and hitting the rollout
button again.
In fact, if you do it this way, you can stop the rollout, save the match
or session, and the rollout settings and results will be saved too. So,
you can close GNU, re-open your match later, and continue the rollout
where you left off (actually, only some of the settings are saved,
including the ply of the rollout; others you'll have to reenter manually,
including the number of trials).

A good trick is to open the task manager (ctrl - alt - del) and right
click on the gnubg.exe process and lower its priority. That way your
system will respond more quickly to your other work.

Doug Gitlin writes:
You can also do that from within GNU. There's an "enter command" item on
one of the menus (the edit menu I think). A window will pop up, and you
can type "set priority idle" which I think has the same effect.

Jørn Thyssen writes:
If you want "set priority idle" to be persistent, you can add the command
to a file named .gnubgrc placed in the same directory as the .gnubgautorc
file. The .gnubgrc file is read after .gnubgautorc.

I've found that the "set priority idle" command doesn't work quite as well
as going into XP's task manager and setting the priority there. If I do it
through XP, I'm able to run other applications without any noticeable slow
down; if I do it through GNU, I do still notice some slow down.
