"Thematic"

I often encounter the term "thematic" in backgammon discussions and the
more advanced backgammon books, but I have never been able to find a
definition for the term in any glossary. I gather that it relates to some
well-known more or less standard play, but that is the limit of my
understanding. If someone could provide a more rigorous definition, perhaps
with a few examples, I would appreciate it.

You will hardly find "thematic" in any specialized glossary simply
because it's a word used throughout any fields of problem solving
which scenarios are susceptible of being categorized for analysis.

I understand the "theme" of a situation just as its most relevant
feature. So let me make an attempt of a definition:  "Thematic" -- Said of
an action/assertion that meets/describes the main feature of a given
situation.

A play is "thematic" if it is in accordance with the general strategic plan
for the position.  So for instance, if you decide that your strategic plan
is to build a prime, then a prime-building play will be "thematic."  A play
that runs counter to the plan is "anti-thematic."

Anti-thematic plays are not necessarily bad.  Obviously, if your plan is
wrong then playing according to the plan, while "thematic," will usually be
a mistake!  But even if your general plan is correct, sometimes an urgent
issue arises that demands immediate attention.  Such urgent issues are
often called "tactical" issues.  Then the correct play will usually be to
counter the urgent threat, even though it might be anti-thematic.  When the
threat is met you can then return to your main strategy.

Games often progress along a "theme".  The simplest theme is a racing
game.  There's also the holding game, the priming game, the blitz, the
closeout, the backgame, etc.

Think of theme as the overall strategy; playing thematically is making
plays that support your overall strategy while avoiding plays that
undermine your strategy.  For instance, if the theme is a holding game
you want to occupy a point six points away from your opponent's point.
Abandoning that point would be anti-thematic.
