Yes, Tavla is still alive ... According to a survey we made, there are
approximately 30 million Tavla players in turkey who have very little
knowledge about the doubling cube so modern backgammon as well ...
Tavla can be thought as the cubeless variation of Backgammon ... For
those who want to learn the basic differences:

BOARD

  BG: Tournament type 21'' board
Tavla: Boards of a variety of styles and sizes

DICE

BG: 2 dice and 1 dice cup per player
Tavla: 2 dice in total, no dice cups

DIRECTION OF PLAY

BG: By mutual agreement or highest throw entitles a player to choose
    direction and/or checkers
Tavla: By mutual agreement, players decide on direction and checkers

CASTING THE DICE

BG: Dice must be thrown from dice cup and vigorously shaken prior to
    rolling
Tavla: Dice are thrown from the hand, cups can be used by mutual
    agreement

LEGAL ROLLS

BG: Dice must be thrown on right-hand side and must not be "cocked"
Tavla: Dice can be thrown any side, dice are cocked only if they land
out of the board and/or if they are not rested flat

COCKED DICE

BG: Both dice must lie flat on the playing surface on the right side
of the board. Both dice be re-cast if one or both are illegal
Tavla: Dice landing on checkers, or landing on opposite side of
the board are legal. Both dice be re-cast if one or both are
    illegal

OPENING ROLL

BG: Both players throw one die, player throwing highest plays the
numbers on both dice at start of each game
Tavla: In first game, both players throw one die, highest rolling
player throw both dice again. Winning player rolls first for
    subsequent games

PREMATURE ROLLS

BG: Formal rules govern premature actions
Tavla: No formal rules govern premature actions

CHECKER MOVEMENT

BG: The numbers on the dice may be played in any order. Both dice must
be played if possible. If only one move is playable then the highest
    number must be played
Tavla: The numbers on the dice may be played in any order. Both
dice must be played if possible. If only one move is
playable then the highest number must be played (Same as BG).

PICK AND PASS

BG: Pick and pass in home board is permitted
Tavla: Pick and pass in home board is [not?] permitted

TOUCH IT - MOVE IT

BG: Touch move is not enforced, a player may move the checkers and
return them to their original position before deciding on the final
    move
Tavla: Touch move is not enforced. But once a checker is moved and the
player lifted his hand from that checker, it can`t be returned to its
    original position

BEAR OFF

BG: Exact number is not required to bear a checker
  Tavla: (Same as BG)

END OF MOVE

BG: A player's move ends when the dice are lifted from the board. The
opponent must wait for the player to signal the end of their turn
    before casting the dice
Tavla: A player's move ends when he has lifted his hand from the last
    checker to be moved

SCORING

BG: Gammons and backgammons score double and triple the stake
    respectively
Tavla: Both gammons and backgammons score two points

DOUBLING CUBE

BG: Games are played with the cube and detailed rules govern cube
    handling
Tavla: Games are cubeless, no rules governing cube actions

MATCH PLAY

BG: Games played to set number of points, with Crawford Rule in force
Tavla: Games played to set number of points, Crawford Rule is unknown

TIME FRAME FOR MOVES

BG: Clock Rules may be in force
  Tavla: No formal time constraints

JARGON

BG: Players exhibit affinity for jargon during discourse
Tavla: Players are familiar with jargon coming from Persian language.
